I was near the Highland Snow Park yesterday about noon. After I had stopped at the Snow Park and did not see anything, I took the other dirt road up to the east.
I was trying to see a Great Gray Owl.
Almost to MP 13, I stopped and used my MP3 player through the car speakers with a Barred Owl call. Khanh Tran and I had a Great Gray Owl respond to the Barred Owl call at the snow park once before, so I was hoping to get one to respond.
Just after starting the recording, I saw an owl fly in out of the corner of my eye. It made no sound at all.
Fortunately, I saw it, because as you can see here, I never would have seen it otherwise. This is the view from where I was when it flew in:
As you can see, it is almost invisible.
Fortunately, it stuck around and I was able to get a few good shots of it:
I’m still looking for my first look at a Great Gray Owl, but I was thrilled to get my first Barred Owl photos.
